Anniina’s story
I’m an active person and I like to be involved in a lot of things. About a year ago, I signed up for the Women’s Emergency Preparedness Association’s soldiers’ home course and got involved. This gave me the final spark to join the Soldiers’ Home Association and we are on that path! I also have acquaintances who are involved in sister activities, so in the end it was an easy decision.
The library was my biggest interest, so from the very beginning I wanted to be a library sister. I did my first shift with an experienced library sister, so it felt safe to get started. Even though there was a longer break after the first shift before the next time I could get to work, and on top of that, sister who was coming with me fell ill, the initial guidance was so good that I was able to do well on my own!
I’m currently studying to become a veterinarian, so I’m involved in the activity with a small contribution, I do a 3-hour library shift about once a month, mainly on weekends. Sister shifts are asked quarterly, so you can express wishes and adjust your participation according to your life situation.
During the library shift, visitors are on call on site and help them create a profile for borrowing at the library, sort books and answer questions, among other things. Conscripts often enjoy playing games in the library. I think the library is a wonderful place and I often borrow books from it as well. For the time being, I don’t work shifts elsewhere, but I could consider that at some point.
Even though I’m alone in the library, I’ve gotten to know many wonderful people through my soldiers’ home hobby! I also try to participate in sister evenings, excursions, etc. whenever possible. doing things together.
The best thing is definitely to work with nice, grateful customers – and of course, you also get to enjoy the lovely doughnuts of the mess from time to time. I myself am 26 years old and I feel that this is a hobby suitable for all ages!
